2006 TIMBERS RE-SIGN FORWARD BYRON ALVAREZ Team’s all-time leading goal scorer returns for fourth season

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today announced that forward Byron Alvarez will return to the team for a fourth season.

Alvarez, 27, is the franchise’s career leader in points (81), goals (37) and shots (188), tied for sixth in games (72) and assists (7) and eighth in minutes (5,062). A three-time member of the United Soccer Leagues First Division Team of the Week in 2005, Alvarez tallied nine goals and two assists in his third season with the Timbers.

“Byron is a great person to work with and I look forward to coaching him this season,” said Chris Agnello, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “On the field, he provides a very serious scoring threat every time he touches the ball.”

Prior to joining the Timbers, Alvarez spent time playing for Mexican teams La Piedad and Astros before joining the New York/New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer in 2002, where he made eight appearances for the first team.

“I am so happy to be returning to Portland,” said Alvarez, who played for Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League during the off-season. “With the ideas that coach (Chris) Agnello has, this team is going to have a great season.”

The announcement brings the Timbers’ list of signed players to 18.

ALVAREZ HEADS IN LONE GOAL AS TIMBERS WIN SECOND IN A ROW

May 27th 2006

Timbers forward Byron Alvarez scored the only goal as the Timbers defeated the Minnesota Thunder. It was the second goal of the season for Alvarez.

BLAINE, Minn. - Byron Alvarez scored on a header in the 34th minute and the Portland Timbers defeated the Minnesota Thunder at the National Sports Center Saturday night.

The Timbers (3-4-1, 10pts) broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar grabbed a loose ball near midfield. He dribbled the ball up, then crossed it into the Minnesota penalty area. Alvarez got on the end of the ball and his header sailed past Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren to put the Timbers up 1-0.

Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders, the franchise’s career leader in shutouts (18), collected his first shutout of the season.

Portland had a great opportunity to take the lead early in the game, when midfielder Mamba Chisoni put a cross into the Thunder penalty area. Midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer was waiting at the near post and forward Alejandro Gutierrez was at the far post, but neither was able to get a head on the ball and the Thunder defense was able to clear.

Minnesota (1-4-1, 4pts) had a chance to even the score late in the game when Thunder midfielder Godfrey Tenoff launched a shot from distance. Saunders was only able to parry the ball, and it fell to midfielder Kiki Lara, who launched his shot past the Timbers keeper and into the goal, but Lara was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed.

Up next, the Timbers have a home-and-home weekend series against the Seattle Sounders. Portland opens the series with a 7 p.m. match on Friday, June 2, in Seattle. The Timbers will then host the visiting Sounders on Saturday, June 3, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at PGE Park.

HEAD COACH CHRIS AGNELLO ON THE MATCH:
“Tonight’s win was huge. It was our first win on the road this season, and it gives the players the confidence they need, knowing that that they can win games away from home. Everybody came out tonight and played well; I don’t think anyone had a bad game. There was a tremendous team effort tonight.”

“Seattle is going to be a very strong team and we’re expecting them to play very hard against us next weekend, but this win tonight gives us the huge confidence boost we need going into those games next weekend and get the results we need.”

NOTES: Timbers midfielder Alejandro Gutierrez made his first start of the season at forward ... the game was the second of a doubleheader, the first game being the inaugural game of the Minnesota Lightning women’s soccer team … the National Sports Center, in addition to hosting tonight’s game, was also holding its annual NSC Cup, with more than 275 teams of all ages and skill levels participating in a weekend-long tournament … the National Sports Center features 52 soccer fields.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar converted a penalty kick and scored again in a shootout to lead the Portland Timbers past English team Coventry City 4-3 on penalty kicks in front of 10,985 Saturday night at PGE Park.

After finishing 90 minutes knotted at 1-1, the Timbers emerged as victors by converting all four of their penalty kicks they faced. Coventry’s players missed their final two attempts to seal the victory for Portland.

The crowd was the fifth largest in Timbers history since the team joined the USL First Division in 2001.

With the win, the Timbers move to 3-5-3 all-time against British opponents, improving to 1-0-1 since the franchise returned to Portland.

After a brief conversation at midfield, Coventry led off the shootout by converting their first three shots, with Issac Osbourne, Andrew Whing and Liam Davis all finding the back of the net. Alcaraz-Cuellar, Tom Poltl, Alejandro Gutierrez and Byron Alvarez all converted for Portland while David McNamee and Claus Bech Jorgensen missed to end the match.

Coventry jumped out to an early lead when in the eighth minute, Dele Adebola got on the end of a cross at the edge of the Timbers penalty area. Adebola headed the ball down into the path of the on-rushing Jay Tabb, who froze Timbers keeper Josh Saunders before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner and pushing Coventry ahead 1-0.

The Timbers evened the score in the 67th minute. Alcaraz-Cuellar took a corner kick on the far side of the field, sending the ball towards the penalty spot. Jorgensen tried to clear the ball for Coventry, but the ball hit his hand on the clearance and referee Yader Reyes immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Alcaraz-Cuellar stepped up to take the kick and sent goalkeeper Andy Marshall in the wrong direction before slotting the ball into the bottom-right corner and leveling the score at 1-1.

The Timbers had an opportunity in the 53rd minute when Poltl grabbed the ball and rushed downfield. Poltl reached the edge of the penalty area, and crossed the ball into the center, where forward Jaime Ambriz was making a run. Ambriz got on the end of the ball, but the linesman ruled him offside.

Up next, the Timbers travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on the Charleston Battery in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. The teams face off on Wednesday, July 12, with kickoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific).

HEAD COACH CHRIS AGNELLO ON THE MATCH
“This was certainly a great opportunity for us to gauge the standard of our team. Coventry City is very crisp, and has very sharp touches, especially for only being two weeks into their pre-season. Our team had plenty of good, solid play, and I think tonight’s result worked out very well. The win will go a long way for us, we’ve been having a bit of run of bad luck in the league, and this will certainly help lift team spirits. We’ve been practicing penalty kicks in training, and it paid off tonight.”

NOTES: The match was the first of a two-game U.S. tour for Coventry City … the team will also face off against the BYU Cougars before returning to England … samba band Lions of Batucada entertained the crowd before the match … defender Josh Brown played for the first time since suffering a groin strain on June 10 vs. Vancouver … goalkeeper Martin Hutton made his first appearance this season for the Timbers, coming on as a second-half sub and defending the goal in the shootout.
